"Learn to Navigate Your Life!"
Why COMPASS?
The COMPASS course is designed to appeal to contemporary sensibilities. It speaks the language of many of today's audiences by beginning with an exciting short dramatic film, "Photo Justice", designed to emotionally grab viewers' attention. Hot music, motorcycles and moving camera shots set the tone. The ½ hour movie presents issues that raise substantial questions. It acts as a catalyst to stimulate discussion and develop consciousness, simultaneously creating interest for the rest of the program that is to follow. The Facilitator's Guide gives detailed instruction in how to lead over twenty hours of activities, which are designed to encourage positive behavioral change. This strategy has been highly successful. Participants have responded enthusiastically to a participatory rather than pedantic or intellectual approach.
The overall result is an exemplary program, which teaches life skills and encourages positive character development.
Benefits & Distinctions
In-depth character development training - The primary goal of the COMPASS program is to teach responsibility in order to positively effect personal development, crime prevention and productivity. COMPASS is non-sectarian, not aiming to impose a specific set of narrowly defined values, but rather to guide the participants to evolve their own consciously developed values. It is an in-depth program, with over twenty hours of activities designed to foster healthy life skills, including goal-setting, conflict resolution, communication, decision-making, teamwork, problem solving and other success strategies. The training empowers participants to make and implement decisions more effectively, preventing problems and leading to greater personal success and well-being.
Cost effective and user friendly - Easily implemented with the guidance provided in the Facilitator's Guide, COMPASS is designed to be user friendly in its format and instructions, making it feasible for a teacher, counselor or other capable adult to run the program. In contrast, many other character development programs require in-service instruction or professional trainers. These approaches carry a much higher cost per participant compared to the cost of the COMPASS program materials, which can be used again and again by a facilitator. The reproducible handouts and worksheets contained in the Facilitator's Guide provide master forms for materials that the participants can take with them, supporting ongoing learning. The curriculum is easily adaptable to different circumstances, making it possible to use with a variety of school subjects, a range of age groups and varying capabilities of the participants .
"A thousand mile journey begins with one step."
